What is Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2?

Simply put, it’s an anti-aging treatment to restore lipid loss. What is lipid loss? We are always excited when a new fragrance comes out from Tauer Perfumes. Andy has never disappointed us yet and it was no different with Au Coeur du Désert. This fragrance is a new Extrait de Parfum ‘interpretation’ of Andy’s 2010 scent, L’air du Désert Marocain. What does that mean? On a simple level, if you love L’ Air du Désert Marocain then you will love this scent.
What is the difference then?
First, this is a 20% fragrance concentration. This woody, oriental draws on similar notes and the feeling is similar, but there is something richer about this fragrance that cannot be simply attributed to the higher fragrance concentration.
Tauer Perfumes say it like this,

If perfumery is art, AU COEUR DU DÉSERT is a statue carved out of sun
beaten timber, softened with a gloss of aged patchouli, and a
patina of ambergris, coming to life with a balsamic glow.

We agree but perhaps if we don’t get quite so poetic we could say this is simply the next level for Andy in this range of his fragrances. We definitely know it is a Tauer perfume: complex, sophisticated and challenging. Don’t even think that you know what this smells like by spraying it on a blotter, like all Tauer fragrances this must be sprayed on the skin to be experienced. The dry down is not the same as that first spray and that is part of the magic. From the cedar wood, to the amber and leather and then on to the patchouli, ambergris and sandalwood, there is no mistaking this for anything but a Tauer perfume.
Does it take us to the heart of the desert?
We aren’t sure if we love this one more than the original, and think in the end it is l’Air du Désert Marocain that is still our favourite. But if you are a Tauer fan you must add this to your collection.

We are often asked in the store: Why don’t I smell Escentric Molecule 01 when I wear it?
For any of you who have worn Molecule 01 you know exactly what we are talking about. Others may have stopped you on the street to ask you what you are wearing but you, the wearer, don’t smell it. Maybe when you first spray it on yourself, there is a hint of something but soon enough that scent is gone and it is like you have never put any fragrance on. Is that the magic of Escentric Molecule 01 or is there something more to it?
There is definitely more to this fragrance created by perfumer Geza Schoen than this being a magical fragrance, there is science and understanding of the molecules that make up fragrance that has allowed him to achieve his creations of Molecule 01, Molecule 02 and Molecule 03.

But, anyway, what do “Molecules” smell like?

01 Iso E Super: a dry woody smell, close to cedar, with amber nuances and a slight phenolic aspect (tarry sweet). It is very diffusive and perfectly blends with a majority of other perfume materials. Read about Iso E Super here.

02 Ambroxan: a smell of ambergris. This substance has a sweet dry smell, reminiscent of old paper and cardboard, with a sensible marine accord and nuances of cedarwood, pine needles, and musk (close to ambrette seed). To some people it also has a green nuance of tea, as well as labdanum and even nuts.

03 Vetiveryl acetate is a semi-synthetic material, a vetiverol derivative, which is the core material responsible for the vetiver smell. Vetiveryl acetate is warm, spicy and fresh, it smells like wood (relatively close to sandal), with noticeable powdery, earthy/rooty and sweet lactonic and nutty nuances.

At this time of the year, summer sun, heat, salt water and chlorine can play havoc with our skin leaving it dehydrated. Our natural moisture levels get depleted, which ends up leaving our skin not only feeling dry and rough but looking that way too. There are steps to take to help restore balance and have healthy skin.

CLEANSE

We hear so much about using the right cleanser and our goal is always to prepare the skin for the next step in our skin care regimen and to make sure we keep the PH balanced. If your skin is feeling dry then use a gentle or moisturizing cleanser is the first step. Never use a hand soap or one that is not made specifically for the face. We also like the new trend that starts with an oil based cleanser to first remove any makeup, dirt and pollution before going to the next step of cleansing with a gentle or moisturizing cleanser.

TONE

Toners, like cleansers, help to prepare the skin and balance the PH before applying any serums or moisturizers. We are not talking about those alcohol based toners we may remember from when we were young and dealing with acne, we are talking about toners that truly help to prepare the skin for the next layer in your skin care regimen. It only takes a few mists, or depending on the toner, applying with your fingers, not a cotton pad, which will absorb the product, on to your skin. Let the toner settle before the next step.

MOISTURIZE

Moisturizers should have antioxidants, and ingredients that help skin hold on to water, skin-repairing ingredients, and/or anti-inflammatory ingredients. You will find many different options but one ingredient that we love is Hyaluronic Acid. This natural humectant is capable of retaining 1,000X its own natural weight in water, making it a high potency ingredient in skin care.

Another option are Face Oils, these oils, derived from plants, usually also have antioxidant properties. You may use a few drops on their own and apply them after you moisturize, or mix them into your sunscreen or moisturizer.

SUNSCREEN

We are told over and over again about the importance of using sunscreen. It helps to protect us from skin cancer but it also helps to slow down the aging process. Sun damage slowly makes your skin less and less able to hold moisture. Make sure to apply enough sunscreen and to reapply every two hours. With makeup, most of us will never reapply and that is why we always suggest a mineral makeup powder that will help us to keep the SPF factor high all day long.

EXFOLIATE

Healthy skin naturally exfoliates, but with dry skin or sun damaged skin, we need to help the process. Either an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) or a BHA ( beta hydroxy acid) depending on your skin type and skin concerns, will help exfoliate the skin and remove old skin cells to let the skin rejuvenate. Using these products overnight will help give you fresher, smoother feeling skin in the morning. Once or twice a week is enough, but listen to your skin to see what works best for you. More is not always better.

Bohea Bohème by Mona di Orio

What is a tea fragrance? Did you even know that there were fragrances infused or inspired by tea? I certainly didn’t when I started my journey into scent. We have a few of them at Etiket: Oolong Infini by Atelier Cologne, focuses on blue tea, and Penhaligon’s Malabah, is all about Early Grey tea, but I want to talk about the latest scent from Mona di Orio: Bohea Bohème.
This creation is by their new in-house perfumer, Fredrik Dalman, who studied at the same place as Mona di Orio, Art et Parfum. Now I am not sure that there is any need to make any further comparison about whether this fits the mould of a Mona di Orio fragrance because it simply is one. As with any creation from the house, Jeroen Sogtoen is involved in the direction of the fragrance and the end result will and does have that magical chiaroscuro quality that all of the Mona di Orio scents have to one degree or another.
On first spraying Bohea Bohème I am taken to Hong Kong, to an afternoon tea I had at the Peninsula Hotel in December of 1998, I remember the year as I had missed the excitement of flying into the old Hong Kong Airport. It was the first time I had ever had a deep dark oolong tea and I was doing my best to love it as I sat there feeling quite swell sipping tea and eating sandwiches and all of the clotted cream I could get out of the silver serving dish and on to my scones. Scent for me, as I have said many times, is always a memory first before it is anything else. After the first spray I wanted to see where it would take me. Would I stay there sipping my tea or would I continue on and where would I go?
If this scent were only about tea then it would never have taken me anywhere. It is the layers of scent that transported me. The first whiff of the Italian Bergamot and the soft gentleness of the Florentine Iris and the sweetness of the Osmanthus Absolute that round out the fragrance to take me from my cup of tea, in this case Wuyi or Bohea tea all fir and pine, to the beautiful surroundings of that elegant lobby, the Rolls Royce waiting out front, and the warm, humid air that beckons one to finish their tea and head out to catch the ferry to cross the harbour and then on to whatever the night may bring. This is an elegant and sexy fragrance that is certainly not prim and proper even if it starts with tea, it ends far from there and I can’t wait to see exactly where. I am always looking for new products and brands to complete our selection of skincare and more recently I have wanted to find a brand to help complete our natural skincare selection. Although we have great options with Tata Harper, Consonant, and Pai, I feel we have room for a few more and Graydon Clinical Luxury Skincare definitely has its place at Etiket.

Why Graydon Clinical Luxury Skincare?

First of all I wanted to find something made in Canada if possible. I know we have great skin care resources here and also because of the fluctuation of our Canadian dollar. I was approached by Mitchell from Graydon about six months back and I started to take a look at who and what they were – or I should say, who is Graydon and what is her philosophy on skincare. I liked what I saw and then as fate would have it, Graydon was coming to Montreal so we set up a meeting on a Saturday afternoon to get to know each other and her products. Wherever possible I like to meet the person who is behind a brand – be it skincare, fragrance or make-up. I think that when you meet the creator you learn more about the philosophy of the brand, and the culture of the company, which is going to come through in the actual products and eventually in the relationship that you will build together.

Why the tagline Clinical Luxury?

That was my first question for Graydon as she started to lay out her products.
The clinical part derives from the following:
• The products contain bioactive ingredients which work to maintain and restore the youthful beauty in your skin. Filled with omega rich oils, antioxidants, phytosterols, linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid, carotenoids, high levels of both tocotrienols and tocopherols (which are the natural isomers of Vitamin E), flavonoids and a plethora of vitamins and minerals, the ingredients and research within the line offers you unparalleled quality and product functionality.
• You will not find any mineral oils, chemicals, parabens or sulfates. No artificial dyes or synthetic aromas. It is gluten free, and almost all vegan, and organic whenever possible. There is no use of nut derived ingredients due to the prevalence of nut related allergies. (They are not certified nut-free as they are not produced in a certified nut free laboratory.)
The luxury part is easy to see and feel once you start using the products. They are simple and effective and feel and smell beautiful.

Who is Graydon?

As we continued our conversation and I tried the different products I also learned about Graydon’s journey and what brought her to skincare.
She was a yoga instructor into holistic health and interested in the culinary world where she saw, learned and studied the power of plant-based ingredients to nourish and protect our skin. The first product she made (in her kitchen) was The Putty, and she made it for her yoga students who were dealing with skin issues. She and the brand have come a long way since then.

What you will find in Graydon SkinCare?

• Plant powered ingredients that have transformative, nutrient dense qualities that are easily absorbed so that your skin gets the nutrients it needs.
• Whenever possible, ingredients used are sourced organic plant based ingredients from Canadian growers and manufacturers such as broccoli and berry seeds oil. Outside of Canada, they have developed partnerships with fair trade farmers in India to source Ayurvedic ingredients such as rosewater. Another one of their favourite food grade ingredients is manuka honey (with bee venom) known for its anti-inflammatory healing ability, sourced from New Zealand.

By the end of our meeting I was convinced from what I had heard that Gradyon was right for Etiket, but then the next step was to try the products. I always try all products that we have in the store and then have members of my team try them to get their feedback. I happen to be very in to natural skincare these days. I like the texture, feel and smell and as I do take good care of my skin, I am looking more to maintain than to deal with skin problems like acne, or rosacea, okay maybe some age spots…..

One thing I am very big on these days is face oil. I like what they are all about and I also like the feel of them on the skin. There is great power in oils made with the right ingredients – antioxidant rich, soothing to the skin – the last thing they are is greasy or heavy, or at least not the ones we have at Etiket.
Graydon’s is perfect. The Detox + Renew Serum, as it is called, does everything I think a face oil should do. This one is rich in antioxidants because of the Canadian raspberries, blueberries and cranberries. It also has other ingredients that help it to be anti-inflammatory and to help in combination with sun protection. AND it smells and feels beautiful and leaves no residue. Use it on its own or mixed in with your day or night cream. I like to use it as Graydon suggests in combination with the Face Food – a toner that like all of her products, is filled with ingredients that will make a difference in your skin and skin health.
One of the other products that I loved is the Elements Sun Cream Complex. Although not officially an SPF product, with 12.5% nano zinc oxide, this will help in the protection of your skin not only from the sun, but also from other environmental pollutants. I like it because it doesn’t leave my skin all white – a problem with my fair skin that can happen often with physical sunscreens – and it isn’t heavy. Something as a man I think I may be more sensitive too, but who wants a heavy cream on their skin, especially in the heat of the summer?
There is a great All Over Soap & Shampoo that I love to leave in the shower because it is good to use on your body, face or hair. With the simpleness of the ingredients, and no harmful ingredients, it is a simple all-in-one product.
There is also a fabulous Hand & Foot Relief Cream. As a triathlete, I use and abuse my feet and this cream actually made a difference and did not leave my feet all greasy, which is a complaint of mine and often stops me from using a foot cream even though I need one.

I could continue with The Green Cream, the All Over Elixir Oil, the Aloe Cleanser, etc. If you are looking to try something new or to add to your regular skincare products, I would suggest you give Graydon a try.
