When we were planning what products to carry at Etiket and I thought of what I had next to my creams on the bathroom counter, there was always a bottle of perfume. It was the same for my mother and I am sure it is the same for most of you. My mother wore Ecusson and whenever I smelt it I knew she was going out. Her hair would be done, her red lipstick on, and my father would wait for her at the bottom of the staircase and as a child I would watch the love affair between them, somehow the perfume all part of the magic.

There is something about perfume and love that goes together isn’t there?
We have to love the perfume we wear if we are going to put it on all day and be identified with it don’t we?
Is there anything that creates memories quite the same as a perfume?

My love affair with Atelier Cologne started long before we had it in the store. I first saw it in a magazine, and then experienced it at Bergdorf Goodman in New York, and then visited their store in Nolita

Atelier Cologne: 247 Elizabeth Street New York

and heard the story of the Cologne Absolue. Then like the two founders who fell in love with each other and created Atelier Cologne, I fell in love too. I didn’t want to carry perfumes that you could find anywhere and I wanted to find perfumes that had a story behind them, that in their own way would touch anyone that tried them.

Atelier Cologne was born out of an encounter between Sylvie Ganter and Christopher Cervasel. Both of Italian descent: she, from Marseilles, who lives in New York; he, from Toulouse, who lives in Paris. Perfume has always been their passion and their profession. They share the same love for the legendary perfumery classic, the eau de cologne. In concert they combined their thirst for creation and desire to establish the first fragrance house entirely dedicated to cologne. Their dream: to create colognes of character to be worn as an eau de parfum or extract, while exalting the characteristic and magic freshness of cologne. After many years in the making, the dream comes true. They give birth to a new family of fragrances: the Colognes Absolues.

Sylvie Ganter and Christopher Cervasel: Creators of Atelier Cologne

Atelier: A workshop or studio, specifically of an artist, artisan, or designer. A place for the execution of handcrafts or to practice arts and leisure; a place where an artist creates his body of art.

Cologne: The original eau de cologne was created three hundred years ago by an Italian perfumer established in Cologne, Germany. His fresh blend of citrus oils of lemon, orange, tangerine, bergamot, lime, grapefruit and Néroli was inspired by the memory of his homeland. It offered a revolutionary alternative to the heavy scents of the times and inspired a new way to wear personal fragrance.
In modern times, fragrances are often categorized by both their scent construction (cologne, floral, chypre…) and the concentration of oils (cologne, perfume, eau de parfum…). The term cologne can apply to both the construction and the oil concentration. Sylvie and Christophe shared an inherent love for the citrusy cologne construction, but their focus became the creation of the ideal combination of oils for each scent that was both long-lasting and balanced. In turn their collection demanded a new classicfication of scent, the Cologne Absolue.

Cologne Absolue: The Original Five

Atelier Cologne: Perfume house crafting colognes of character. The master perfumers of Atelier Cologne blend unexpected and rare extracts with signature fresh citruses to create Colognes Absolues, concentrated formulas with distinctive and long-lasting sillage.

Formulation: Cologne Absolues are based on percentages ranging from 12-20% in concentration.

Packaging Design: Each bottle is custom blown, french glass, 200ml. Bottles are finished with a handmade leather cap from craftsmen in Besançon, France.

Each of the eight scents is inspired by the singularity of a moment. When you view the images connected with each scent and read the inspirational moment (found on the packaging), you are transported to a vivid scene that almost allows you to smell the product before you even get your hands on it. Altogether, it creates a feeling unique to Atelier Cologne.

The two newest fragrances from Atelier Cologne: Rose Anonyme and Vétiver Fatal have just come to Etiket and we had Gerard Camme, president of Atelier Cologne, come to the store to give us the incredible story of each. I love both but today I want to talk about Rose Anonyme. It has a touch of Patchouli, which is my favourite scent. I fell in love with it as soon as Gerard told us it had a touch of Patchouli; I liked it before I even smelled it.

Rose Anonyme is an oriental floral fragrance for both men and women. Jerome Epinette, one of the perfumers collaborating with Atelier Cologne mastered this fragrance. Rose Anonyme is veiled in mystery….

She turned the dial until the safe opened, revealing the diamond. She had stolen jewels before, but none compared with this one. She left a single rose and the scent of her perfume in its place for him to find. In a moment she’d be halfway around the world and he would be in pursuit. The chase began again…

Does the story not want to make you try it?
There are mornings when I go into the store early before we open to put it on myself – the benefits of owning the place!
This is a sexy, seductive fragrance that makes you feel exactly that. A little erotic?
Well maybe not at 8 AM but then again……

~ Simon Tooley
