Redness, Flushing, Bumps? Let’s Talk Rosacea

Gentle skincare recommendations and tips.

April is Rosacea Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to the millions living with sensitive, redness-prone skin. If you are navigating rosacea, finding the right skincare can make all the difference. We’re shining a spotlight on rosacea and sharing our gentle, effective options designed to soothe, calm, and support your skin, every step of the way.

WHAT IS ROSACEA? + TIPS TO MANAGE SYMPTOMS

Rosacea is a skin condition characterized by redness on the face, small dilated blood vessels, pustules and swelling. Rosacea affects all ages and more than 3 million people in Canada alone. Left untreated, rosacea can worsen over time.

It is not known what causes rosacea, and there is currently no cure. There are products, however, that can help manage this condition. Here are five tips that can help you calm rosacea symptoms:

Go easy on your skin

You want to be gentle in every way with your skin. Look for calming ingredients in your skincare products and treat your skin how you would treat a baby’s. Quick tip: use lukewarm water when you wash your face – not too cold, not too hot.

Keep your skincare routine simple

Stick to the basics. The last thing you want to do is overwhelm rosacea-prone skin by mixing a long list of ingredients that will just do more harm then good.

Test skincare and makeup products before applying them to your face

If you’ve never tried a product or it seems that everything you apply to your face stings, testing can help. To test a product, dab a small amount near (but not on) your rosacea-prone skin. If it irritates your skin (burning, stinging, etc.) within 72 hours, you know not to use it.

Use sunscreen daily

The sun can worsen rosacea. Sun exposure is actually one of the most frequent causes of a rosacea flare-up. Even people with dark skin can have a rosacea flare-up after being outdoors in the sun. For that reason, we strongly recommend wearing sunscreen every single day to protect your skin from UV rays, but also to prevent a rosacea flare-up.

Avoid common food and beverage triggers

While alcohol is not responsible for the onset of rosacea, it has been identified as an aggravating factor, particularly red wine. But it’s not the only one: caffeine and spicy foods are among the most common triggers of the disease.

Your doctor knows best

If untreated, rosacea can worsen and/or become very uncomfortable to live with. We recommend visiting a doctor to receive a proper diagnosis and for the appropriate treatment to be prescribed.

CONTROL REDNESS WITH SUITABLE SKINCARE

Cleansers

Cleansers are a must in a daily skincare routine. However, certain cleansers can be harsh and stripping on the skin, which can cause rosacea to flare up. When selecting a cleanser, it is important to find one with soothing ingredients, free of alcohol and harsh irritants such as physical exfoliants. Also, make sure you wash your face with warm water, not hot.

HEXAM Gentle Cleanser
VIVIER

A gentle pharmaceutical-grade cleanser that helps clean and purify skin by removing dirt and oil. It contains hexamidine, a unique antimicrobial with powerful anti-redness and bacteria fighting properties.
Superkind Softening Cleanser
TATA HARPER

A supremely soothing, micro-foaming cleanser that’s non-stripping and works to gently dissolve buildup and impurities.

Toners

The harsh, alcohol-based toners we once knew are a thing of the past. Today’s toners are offered in an array of formulas, designed to treat pores, excess oil and overall redness and irritation. Our toner recommendations instantly hydrate and soothe the skin from irritation, making them perfect for those unexpected flare-ups.

Phyto-Calm Flower Mist
GLO SKIN BEAUTY

Get instant relief for reactive moments and parched, dry skin with this calming and cooling face mist. The soothing antioxidants cocoon and calm skin, settling any irritations or skin stress.
Refreshing Toner
VIVIER

This gentle, alcohol-free medical grade toner provides rejuvenating properties with the benefits of antioxidants to recondition the skin and helps restore its protective pH balance.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C serums are formulated with powerful antioxidants designed to protect the skin against environmental aggressors and to brighten the complexion. Studies have even shown that they help counter inflammation in the skin, making them ideal for those with rosacea. As always, we recommend you talk with your dermatologist or skincare specialist before incorporating a vitamin C serum into your routine.

Serum 10
VIVIER

Formulated with pharmaceutical-grade vitamin C, this oil-free serum is ideal for all skin types, especially sensitive skin. It helps reduce signs of environmental damage such as fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin texture and tone.
The Serum
AUGUSTINUS BADER

A fast-absorbing concentrate with vitamin C and resveratrol designed to support total complexion correction, hydration and renewal. It balances and calms stressed, overly reactive skin and helps to reduce redness.

Targeted Treatments

In addition to using calming products, there are a few targeted treatments on the market that aim to correct redness in the skin. These products are formulated with specific ingredients to prevent and correct redness associated with rosacea. We recommend you use them after cleansing and toning, before applying your moisturizer and suncreen.

Redness Solution Complex
VIVIER

This product helps calm and soothe redness, inflammation, irritation and bacteria present in rosacea-prone skin or irritated skin following aesthetic procedures.

Moisturizers

Dehydrated skin can lead to irritation, which can trigger rosacea. The right moisturizer can help keep rosacea flare-ups at bay. People who have rosacea-prone skin are often prone to dry, itchy skin which causes redness to occur. The right moisturizer will provide ample hydration, all while soothing the skin from irritation.

Regenerating Moisturizing Cream
PRO-DERM

A daily cream for sensitive skin, formulated to moisturize, regenerate skin and protect it from the elements. A great option following an aesthetic treatment or if you have red or rosacea-prone skin.

Masks

Masks can provide instant relief, as well as long-term benefits to the skin. These two masks are deeply hydrating and are formulated with ingredients that effectively reduce visual redness, discomfort and heat.

Phyto Corrective Masque
SKINCEUTICALS

This mask has been clinically tested post-procedure to effectively reduce visual redness, discomfort, and heat. It contains pure active botanicals, calming dipeptide and hyaluronic acid.

Sun Protection

Sunscreen is a must in a skincare routine to prevent skin cancer, early signs of ageing and hyperpigmentation. It is especially important for people who suffer from rosacea, as sun exposure is a top trigger for rosacea flare-ups. Our recommendations not only protect, but they also soothe and calm the skin.

Clear Daily Soothing UV Defense SPF 50

A soothing multi-protective SPF 50 with calming tripeptide technology and bisabolol, suitable for sensitive and redness-prone skin.

Clear Daily Soothing UV Defense SPF 50 from SkinCeuticals

Soothing protection for sensitive skin.

SkinCeuticals’ latest innovation, Clear Daily Soothing UV Defense SPF 50, is here!

Offering a hybrid blend of mineral + chemical ingredients featuring soothing technology to defend against UV-induced inflammation, you can expect it to calm sensitive skin, reduce redness, and improve skin texture while leaving a hydrating and transparent finish.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Clear Daily Soothing UV Defense SPF 50 offers broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection for all skin types. The hybrid formula combines 7% zinc oxide and chemical filters with patented Netlock™ technology, a unique sunscreen innovation for an even distribution of actives and a light, non-greasy feel on skin.

It soothes and reduces visible redness, increases skin hydration, improves skin texture and protects the skin from sun damage. It is non-comedogenic making it suitable for acne and blemish-prone skin. It is formulated with organic filters to help offset the appearance of a white cast.

*Tip: Make sure to completely rub in the product until it is no longer visible and completely absorbed.

ADVANCED SOOTHING TECHNOLOGY

Hybrid Blend of UV filters

7% Zinc Oxide (mineral filter): A white powder that acts as a UV protective filter that reflects UVA and UVB rays. It also has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties.

+ 8% Homosalate (chemical filter): A synthetic organic sun filter that absorbs UVB radiation. In addition to protecting the skin from the sun’s harmful effects, homosalate is also a good solvent for other sun filters.

+ 5% Octisalate (chemical filter): An oil-soluble organic sun filter that protects the skin from burning UVB rays.

+ 5% Octocrylene (chemical filter): An organic sun filter, octocrylene absorbs UVB radiation, thereby protecting the skin from the sun’s harmful effects, such as skin aging and the risk of skin cancer. It also enables products to be water resistant.

2.5% Palmitoyl Tripeptide-8
Soothes skin sensitivity and helps reduce UVB-induced inflammation, protecting against sun damage. Did you know? Tri-peptides in skincare are used to help reduce signs of aging including fine lines and wrinkles by improving skin’s elasticity.

0.5% Bisabolol
Reduces visible skin redness (erythema) and inflammation.

7% Glycerin
Draws in and retains moisture, thus hydrating and easing discomfort. Glycerin is a powerful humectant with water-binding properties which support in delivering intense hydration. SkinCeuticals only uses vegetable-derived sources of glycerin.

Netlock™ UV Technology
Netlock™ polymer associated with UV filters for consistent SPF performance and a lightweight, non-greasy feel on skin.

The interlocking filters also provide greater resistance to water, sweat, and sand. This increased resistance not only makes the sun protection last longer, but also limits the migration of the product into the aquatic environment.

The result? A sunscreen that delivers broad-spectrum protection with cosmetic elegance.

HOW TO APPLY

1. For optimal absorption, ensure the skin is well moisturized before application.

2. Apply 2-4 pumps to face, neck and decolletage 15 minutes before sun exposure and before applying makeup.

3. The initial white cast is an application guide to ensure every area of the face is covered. After 3-5 minutes, the white cast fades, after which you can apply makeup.

4. Re-apply at least every two hours, or after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating. Re-apply immediately after any towel drying.

POWERFUL SOOTHING RESULTS

Clear Daily Soothing UV Defense SPF 50 was evaluated by over 90 diverse subjects (Fitzpatrick I-VI) with sensitive, sun-reactive skin over 4 weeks.

After 1 Week:

95.7% felt soothed throughout the day
82.9% noticed visible redness reduction
91.3% felt smoother skin

*PROTOCOL: A 4-week consumer test was conducted on 92 subjects with Fitzpatrick I-VI, ages 25-60 with visible or self-perceived redness/blotchiness, rough skin texture, or dull skin. 50 subjects had previously experienced skin discomfort/reactivity due to sun exposure. Clear Daily Soothing UV Defense SPF 50 was applied once daily in the morning as the last step in skincare routine with reapplication every 2 hours when exposed to sun. Efficacy was assessed at immediate, week 1, and week 4 patients.

Skincare Products for Rosacea-Prone Skin

A skincare routine for rosacea-prone skin...

Did you know that April is considered Rosacea Month?

If you or someone you know suffers from Rosacea, you know how difficult it can be to manage it. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this skin condition, it is characterized by redness on the face, small dilated blood vessels, pustules and swelling. Rosacea affects all ages and more than 3 million people in Canada alone.

It is not known what causes rosacea, and there is currently no cure. There are, however, products that can help manage this condition over time. We asked our Holistic Aesthetician Jordanna to share the products she recommends to her clients for calming rosacea-prone skin.

I always tell my clients to look at their lifestyle habits; do certain foods create more redness and sensitivity (red wine, spicy food, diary, sugar, etc.)? Hot showers and saunas can also trigger rosacea.

For people with a compromised skin barrier, skin care should be gentle and soothing to calm down the inflammation. Face washing should be done outside of the shower using a sensitive skin cloth and tepid water. When washing your face in the shower, the pressure is often too hard and the temperature too hot!

Here are some products I recommend to promote a healthy skin barrier, overtime strengthening the skin and creating skin longevity.

CLEANSERS

The first step is the most important one, cleansing the skin. Look for cleansers that are gentle and hydrating, this will balance the PH of the skin without stripping it of its natural oils. Tata Harper’s SuperKind Softening Cleanser has a soothing effect and leaves the skin hydrated and calm. This cleanser can be used morning and night to jump start your skincare routine.

TONER/ESSENCE/MIST

One of the most common questions I get is, “do I need to use a toner (aka essence, mist, tonic, etc.)?” ABSOLUTELY! A toner will once balance your PH (so you’re not too acidic and too alkaline) and prepare the skin to receive the following products and keep them locked in. Pai Skincare’s Century Flower Lotus & Hyaluronic Acid Barrier Support Mist is a best seller amongst those with sensitive skin and even those without. The smell is subtle and fresh, this product helps calm and hydrate post-cleanse.

EXFOLIANTS

Most people who have rosacea are too sensitive for a physical exfoliant (scrubs), which is why I recommend opting for a chemical one. When looking for chemical exfoliants, it is better to use ones that contain AHAs to help renew and regenerate the skin. Tata Harper SuperKind Radiance Mask is a mask that exfoliates the skin gently, once again helping strengthen the skin barrier. You can use this product twice a week to see a noticeable difference in reduced redness and overall glow.

OILS

Using oils on the skin is highly recommended to help balance your skin’s oil production. Whether you’re dry, oily or dehydrated, there is a face oil for you. The Light Fantastic by Pai Skincare is a morning and night time oil made with ceramides to help strengthen the skin. This light odourless oil is best for sensitive and reactive skin, making it a must as your last step in your routine.

SUNSCREEN

As previously mentioned, sun exposure can trigger rosacea. Everyone needs to be using a good sunscreen, no matter where you live or what time of year it is. Colorescience’s All Calm SPF 50 is a great way to treat the rosacea, balance complexion and protect the skin from environmental damage. For those who are looking for a lighter transparent sunscreen, try Coola’s Fragrance Free Classic Face SPF 50

TREATMENTS

Tata Harper’s SuperKind facial is specifically created for those with rosacea and sensitive skin. During the treatment, we use the entire Tata Harper Superkind line, reflexology and gua sha spoon lymphatic draining massage to bring life back to the skin.
