Your moisturizer is an essential part of your skincare routine, no matter what skin type you have. However, if you are not using your moisturizer correctly, you could actually be doing more harm than good. Here are the 5 common moisturizer mistakes to avoid.
1. Not using a moisturizer regularly or at all
Every skin type needs a moisturizer. Hydrated skin reflects light and is plump with water for a more youthful appearance. Your moisturizer also prepares skin for more irritating ingredients such as retinol. No matter how oily your skin may be, you need to moisturize daily. In fact, not using a moisturizer, or not using enough, could be the reason your skin is so oily, as lack of hydration causes the skin to overproduce sebum to compensate, resulting in greasy-looking skin.
2. Aggressive and rough application
Take your time and be gentle with your skin when applying your moisturizer, especially around the delicate eye area. Tugging and pulling of the skin can actually cause wrinkles and sagging. A good rule of thumb is to use your ring finger (your weakest finger) when you apply your moisturizer and eye cream in an upward motion.
3. Using a moisturizer that is not right for your skin type
While everyone needs a moisturizer, not every moisturizer is made the same. There are many products on the market specially made for different skin types and skin concerns. Look for moisturizers with ingredients for your skin type. If you have oily skin, use an oil-free lotion instead of a heavy cream. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to avoid any products with added fragrance. Find the right moisturizer for your skin type HERE.
4. Applying makeup too quickly after moisturizer application
Give your moisturizer some time to soak into your skin. After a few minutes, use a tissue to gently blot off any excess. This will allow for your makeup to last much longer throughout the day.
5. Not exfoliating enough
Yes, exfoliation plays a big role in how well your skin is hydrated. You will never enjoy the full benefits of your moisturizer and all its ingredients if you have a thick layer of dead skin cells in the way. Your moisturizer and all its antioxidant, anti-aging and hydrating benefits will simply lay on the surface of your skin – a waste of your time and money. Use an exfoliating a good exfoliating product for your skin type at least 2-3 times a week. Regular facials will also help to ensure that you get the absolute best out of your moisturizer and other skincare products!
