Manuel Mathieu is an artist deeply rooted in his personal and collective history. His artistic practice ranges from abstract painting to cinema and now perfumery. With his fragrances, he offers a sensory extension of his work, where memory, form, emotion, and storytelling come together.
He collaborated on his inaugural collection with VP perfumer at IFF in Paris Juliette Karagueuzoglou, who boasts a rich history of partnerships with renowned brands like Yves Saint Laurent, Salvatore Ferragamo and Giorgio Armani. Both were united by a shared ethos: revealing their inner selves to share personal stories that impact others.
Manuel Mathieu realized the design of the bottle was just as important as the scent within. Mathieu creates ceramics in his art practice, and began to conceptualize the bottle in his ceramic studio. To him, shaping clay is molding the earth, physically and spiritually. Through his process, he searched for something that felt familiar, with tension and moments of disruption.
The chosen design stands on its own as a sculpture, a shape similar to a mountain. Haiti, Manuel Mathieu’s homeland, means “land of high mountains” in the indigenous Taíno language. The bottle pays homage to the land while creating its own mythical mountain, reflecting Mathieu’s origin story, and the artist himself.

Manuel Mathieu was born in October 1986 in Port-au-Prince, Haïti. He emigrated to Montreal at the age of 19 to live with his grandmother.
In 2016, he completed his Masters in Fine Arts at Goldsmiths, University of London.

His work explores major themes: historical violence, erasure, spiritual heritage, nature, memory, and resilience, particularly in relation to Haitian history and diasporic identity.

In 2025, he launched his perfume brand, “Chapter 1,” featuring three unisex fragrances (Dsire, Île noire, and ECCCO) created in collaboration with perfumer Juliette Karagueuzoglou (IFF). The handcrafted ceramic bottles echo Haitian landscapes, particularly mountains (high mountain islands), and highlight the convergence between visual art, emotion, and memory.

For best results, we recommend exfoliating first, then applying evenly to cleansed, dry skin. Massage into skin until fully absorbed. Wash hands immediately after use.
The colour will start to deepen after around 2 hours, but allow up to 48 hours for your tan to fully develop. We find it looks best after 24 hours – and if you want more glow, you can always top up.
