The founders of some of our favourite brands share what they've learned from their mothers, and what they're choosing to pass down to their children.
In honour of Mother’s Day, we’ve asked the founders of some of our favourite brands to share with us what they’ve learned from their mothers, and what they’re choosing to pass down to their children. From protecting their skin from the sun to embracing their inner beauty, we wanted to know a little more about the lessons they have learned that made them the women and mothers that they are today.
“My mother and grandmother would always have spa parties with their friends and they all took the time for beauty every day. It was a lot of DIY face masks and treatments using ingredients like avocado, honey, and lemon, and things growing around us locally or fresh from the store. We often made our own honey mask with natural, pure honey. It’s super inexpensive to make and I find it super hydrating and refreshing.
The advice I want to pass down to my daughter is that beautiful skin comes from what you are putting in and on your body, and it’s important to be mindful of this at a young age. Focus on a good regimen and keep your skin healthy and hydrated.”
“My mom has always been very vocal around sun protection, so I developed a love for wide-brimmed hats early.
I want my daughters to understand that beauty is about a trusted and deep connection to ourselves, our community, our world and all its beautiful creatures.”
“I am so thankful to my mother for teaching me that skin concerns need to be professionally diagnosed and treated. I suffered from hormonal acne all through my teens and my mother made sure I saw dermatologists and skin therapists on a regular basis. This truly saved my skin from serious scarring. My mother and I also did facials together at home – a fun tradition I am continuing with my two boys!
Growing up in Finland, my mother also taught me how to enjoy the relaxing and detoxing benefits of a sauna from an early age. I remember my mother dipping freshly cut birch branches into a bail of hot water, and we would breathe in the essential oil vapours. A magical smell of summer and motherly love I will never forget.”
“One of the first things I got from her is the idea of accepting myself the way I am. My mom is not a big makeup fan, so this understanding of my unique beauty, and no need to fix anything in me definitely comes from her. But also, with this, came the idea of preserving our bodies, by drinking at least 2 litres of water per day and wearing sunscreen daily, even on the days I don’t leave the house! Thanks to her, I’ve been doing that since I was 10 years old – before it was a trend! Haha!
On the hair side, she gave me a nice trick to get natural highlights after going to the beach – in the Brazilian days – or in very sunny days, which is to spray chamomile tea on the hair before bathing in the sun. It really works!”
“Less is more. When your skin goes wrong, the tendency is to throw the entire kitchen sink at it, but she always told me never to do that. An to do the exact reverse – scale it back. Allow your skin to calm and rebalance and then take a methodical approach, re-introducing one product at a time, to establish what your skin likes and doesn’t like.
Never pick or squeeze your spots. This will be no surprise, but it’s one thing my mum shared with me when I was growing up as a teenager. This is really important to prevent scarring and stop the spread of more spots.”
“My grandmother Evelyn taught me the importance of skincare rituals at an early age. She taught me how to cleanse, how to moisturize, and how to never ever go to bed with makeup on the skin. I have followed those skincare rituals religiously since she taught me them as a little girl, and I have to say it’s all paid off.
My mother has always been low-key in terms of beauty and cosmetics. She takes good care of her skin, but she only very occasionally wears makeup. My mother taught me the importance of being confident and comfortable in my appearance without makeup. She also taught me how to love my body regardless of how it looks, what number it weighs on a scale, how it is behaving, or how it is dressed at a certain moment. She taught me to love my body for what it does for me each day – for what it can and does do. In fact, we never even owned a scale growing up, so I often didn’t know my body weight. It just wasn’t important, and that has shaped my self-love and body positivity to this day.”
“My mom taught me beauty secrets by just being herself. She was effortless and no-fuss but always pulled together. She has strong bone structure and beautiful skin so, really needed very little in makeup – maybe even just lip and go. She taught me about colour types. Although I am blonde, I am a Winter. Most blondes think pastels and Spring colours work, but as a Winter, dark blues, black, whites, etc. – avoiding yellows – work best. She was absolutely correct.”
“The best beauty advice that I got from my mother is that you are only beautiful on the outside when you are beautiful or happy on the inside. She also told me that if you aren’t wearing SPF, wear a hat!
For my girls, I want them to know that makeup isn’t what will make them beautiful. Feeling beautiful from the inside out is what really matters and what truly shows.”
“Strangely, almost all the beauty/mantra advice I received was from my dad. Just two weeks ago, he offered to mix up some turmeric for my mask instead with my mom, I think I learned more from observing. She taught me to be humble, quietly fierce and incredibly kind. She has an incredible sense of dignity and from her, I learned that true beauty comes from who you are.
The advice I would share with my daughter is to drink water, gets lots of sleep, wear SPF always… those are critical to nurture your outward beauty. True beauty comes from the soul- how kind you are to others and how kind you are to yourself.”
“My mom is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to skincare, and I’m grateful for the advanced techniques she’s taught me. Red light therapy, microneedling, and chemical peels are just a few of the treatments she’s educated me on to keep my skin looking its best. Thanks to her guidance, I’ve also incorporated powerful ingredients like Vitamin C, Retin A, stem cells, growth factors, copper peptides, and more into my routine.
In addition to these advanced treatments, my mom also instilled some basic skincare practices that have stuck with me over the years. Never go to bed with makeup on and always double cleanse at night to ensure your skin is healthy and prepped for your skincare products.
One piece of advice that I’ve taken to heart is to wear SPF every day, even when indoors, and to reapply it multiple times throughout the day. I’ve found a powder SPF that doesn’t interfere with my makeup, making it easy to touch up throughout the day.
My mom has always emphasized the importance of taking care of oneself, and that includes exercise and eating healthy, balanced meals. Making an effort to get outside and breathe in fresh air each day is also key to a healthy mind and body. And at night, it’s important to take a break from screens and noise and unwind with a soothing bath or a good book.
Thanks to my mom’s guidance and these valuable beauty tips, I’ve learned to prioritize self-care and take care of myself so that I can take care of those around me.”
“My mother raised me with all of the beauty secrets from Japanese culture and was the inspiration behind the development of BeautéJaponica. The general concept of our scalp serum was also inspired by ingredients that she shared with me that helped Japanese women grow beautiful hair for centuries.
Beyond that, she has also taught me that beauty comes from within, and that nurturing your senses is true nutrition for your soul.”
“The best beauty secret from my mother was – without a doubt – discovering the powerful benefits of mānuka honey! At first, it helped my cold sores, and eventually, it became my go-to remedy for skin outbreaks, sore throats, and other issues. It’s the natural remedy I had been searching for, and I loved not having to decide between natural or effective.
This beauty secret eventually sparked my entrepreneurial journey. It inspired me to establish Mahoni, a tribute to nature’s potent remedy. Thank you, Mom!”

Have you heard of Pai Skincare's Impossible Glow Drops? Learn how to customize this liquid highlighter to get your glow in time for summer!
Have you tried the Impossible Glow drops from Pai Skincare? The brand first launched this skincare-makeup hybrid product back in 2021. It was so well received that Pai decided to launch two new shades: Champagne and Rose Gold. These highlighters offer a lit-from-within glow in just a few drops. With summer just around the corner, and bronzed, glowing skin making its comeback, we’ve decided to share with you three ways to use the Impossible Glow drops.
1. For subtle radiance, add one drop to your daily moisturizer or SPF.
2. For a more intense glow, massage one to two drops directly onto skin.
3. For a lit-from-within highlight, gently dab on the high points of the face and body.
Pro tip: add a few drops to your body lotion and apply to the legs, shoulders and collarbone for an irresistible glow.
Which shade is best for me?
Although all shades work for all skin tones, you may be wondering which one would complement your skin tone the best. If that’s the case, here are Pai Skincare’s suggestions:
If your skin has pink undertones, you might prefer the Rose Gold shade.
If your skin has more yellow undertones, you might prefer the Champagne shade.
If you’re looking for a warm, sunkissed glow, go for the original shade: Bronze.
Pai’s pro tip? Experiment! All shades work for all skin tones – it’s all about finding the right application to create the effect you’re after.
Did you know that April is considered Rosacea Month?
If you or someone you know suffers from Rosacea, you know how difficult it can be to manage it. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this skin condition, it is characterized by redness on the face, small dilated blood vessels, pustules and swelling. Rosacea affects all ages and more than 3 million people in Canada alone.
It is not known what causes rosacea, and there is currently no cure. There are, however, products that can help manage this condition over time. We asked our Holistic Aesthetician Jordanna to share the products she recommends to her clients for calming rosacea-prone skin.
I always tell my clients to look at their lifestyle habits; do certain foods create more redness and sensitivity (red wine, spicy food, diary, sugar, etc.)? Hot showers and saunas can also trigger rosacea.
For people with a compromised skin barrier, skin care should be gentle and soothing to calm down the inflammation. Face washing should be done outside of the shower using a sensitive skin cloth and tepid water. When washing your face in the shower, the pressure is often too hard and the temperature too hot!
Here are some products I recommend to promote a healthy skin barrier, overtime strengthening the skin and creating skin longevity.
CLEANSERS
The first step is the most important one, cleansing the skin. Look for cleansers that are gentle and hydrating, this will balance the PH of the skin without stripping it of its natural oils. Tata Harper’s SuperKind Softening Cleanser has a soothing effect and leaves the skin hydrated and calm. This cleanser can be used morning and night to jump start your skincare routine.
TONER/ESSENCE/MIST
One of the most common questions I get is, “do I need to use a toner (aka essence, mist, tonic, etc.)?” ABSOLUTELY! A toner will once balance your PH (so you’re not too acidic and too alkaline) and prepare the skin to receive the following products and keep them locked in. Pai Skincare’s Century Flower Lotus & Hyaluronic Acid Barrier Support Mist is a best seller amongst those with sensitive skin and even those without. The smell is subtle and fresh, this product helps calm and hydrate post-cleanse.
EXFOLIANTS
Most people who have rosacea are too sensitive for a physical exfoliant (scrubs), which is why I recommend opting for a chemical one. When looking for chemical exfoliants, it is better to use ones that contain AHAs to help renew and regenerate the skin. Tata Harper SuperKind Radiance Mask is a mask that exfoliates the skin gently, once again helping strengthen the skin barrier. You can use this product twice a week to see a noticeable difference in reduced redness and overall glow.
OILS
Using oils on the skin is highly recommended to help balance your skin’s oil production. Whether you’re dry, oily or dehydrated, there is a face oil for you. The Light Fantastic by Pai Skincare is a morning and night time oil made with ceramides to help strengthen the skin. This light odourless oil is best for sensitive and reactive skin, making it a must as your last step in your routine.
SUNSCREEN
As previously mentioned, sun exposure can trigger rosacea. Everyone needs to be using a good sunscreen, no matter where you live or what time of year it is. Colorescience’s All Calm SPF 50 is a great way to treat the rosacea, balance complexion and protect the skin from environmental damage. For those who are looking for a lighter transparent sunscreen, try Coola’s Fragrance Free Classic Face SPF 50.
TREATMENTS
Tata Harper’s SuperKind facial is specifically created for those with rosacea and sensitive skin. During the treatment, we use the entire Tata Harper Superkind line, reflexology and gua sha spoon lymphatic draining massage to bring life back to the skin.

Have you heard of the cult skincare brand Augustinus Bader? Their face creams, specifically, have been touted by beauty editors and celebrities alike as the best moisturizers money can buy. Why should this brand be on your radar? Well, we’re excited to announce that the Augustinus Bader line will be launching at Etiket! Let’s discover the collection together.
ABOUT THE BRAND
Founded by biomedical scientist Professor Augustinus Bader, the Augustinus Bader brand found overnight success based on 30+ years of research in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine.
In a career that has spanned the globe, the German-born Professor has spent over 30 years researching and developing technologies that activate and harness In a career that has spanned the globe, the German-born Professor has spent over 30 years researching and developing technologies that activate and harness the human body’s capacity to heal, with a focus on the reawakening of cells that become dormant due to aging or trauma. In 2008 he developed a groundbreaking Wound Gel that heals severe skin traumas without the need for surgery or skin grafts. It is this revolutionary technique that inspired Augustinus Bader skincare.
Bader’s business partner Charles Rosier was initially impressed by his work and encouraged Bader to create skincare for the masses to help fund his medical research. The first products to launch were The Cream and The Rich Cream. Both have now won multiple awards – and make radiant, healthy skin accessible and simple.
Over the years, demand for Bader’s products soared on the back of old-fashioned word of mouth. There were no paid placements, big marketing campaigns or pretty packaging – it was the results that spoke for themselves.
WHAT MAKES THE BRAND DIFFERENT?
As we previously mentioned, the success of the brand is based on word of mouth, encouraged by results. Augustinus Bader’s extensive experience in the field of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine has allowed him to create a product line that delivers real results to those who adhere to his 27-day plan. Originally developed to treat wounds, these products harness the power of amino acids and nutrients already native to skin, to nourish and revitalize your complexion. They also get to work stimulating collagen to minimize fine lines and swiftly restore elasticity.
The Bader formula is powered by Professor Bader’s patented TFC8® (Trigger Factor Complex 8) – a cocktail of more than 40 different ingredients that include vitamins, amino acids and molecules naturally found in the body, to name a few. TFC8® was inspired by Bader’s over 30+ years of research and innovation in wound repair and cellular regeneration. It works by guiding key nutrients to the cells, creating an ideal environment for your skin to naturally renew. The result? Better hydration, skin strength and firmness. The support of cell turnover also helps improve vibrancy and luminosity, as well as address issues like fine lines, dark spots and visible pores.
WHY IS THERE A 27 DAY JOURNEY?
This comes down to the fact that every skin cell in the human body is naturally regenerated over 27 days, so this is when you’ll see results. Over this time period, you can expect your complexion to become more hydrated, and to look and feel renewed with an unbeatable glow.
STAR PRODUCTS
While all of the Augustinus Bader products have enjoyed success, it is impossible to read about the brand without mention of the face creams. Two moisturizers have propelled the brand to the top of the charts: The Cream and The Rich Cream. The Cream has a lighter texture, and may be better suited for oily, combination skin types, as well as those who suffer from acne and congested skin. The Rich Cream on the other hand, would be better suited for those with normal to dry skin. Celebrities like Kate Bosworth, Diane Kruger and Victoria Beckham all rave about these moisturizers. Clinical trials also back up the hype: 97% of testers agreed skin tone and texture was visibly improved, while 96% said their skin looked healthier after using both The Cream and The Rich Cream. Testers also noted an improvement in the appearance of wrinkles by more than 160% over a day to day period.
Given the minimal range, you’d think it would only be suitable for a handful of people. However, thanks to their 100% paraben-free and fragrance-free formulas, all skin types can get on board, including overly sensitive ones.
SUSTAINABILITY
One more thing to love about Augustinus Bader is that they are guided by a core set of green values. Sustainability is very important to the brand and is integrated in everything from their clean ingredients, to their eco-conscious packaging.
CLEAN INGREDIENTS
Their products contain the highest quality ingredients – high potency botanicals and clean actives. They’re also 100% free of parabens, fragrance, SLS, SLES, and DEA, heavy metals, talc, petrolatum/paraffin/mineral oil, and do not contain unnecessary preservatives, solvents, and emulsifiers.
Augustinus Bader also vows to use ingredients that are sustainably sourced, clean, and bio-engineered where possible to reduce environmental impact.
PACKAGING
Augustinus Bader has created refills for both The Eye Cream and The Serum to encourage recycling of their products. Furthermore, an estimated 80% of their primary containers are fully recyclable, and an estimated 90% of their secondary containers are fully recyclable. They also use FSC Certified paper.
An estimated 70% of their packaging is plastic-free, and they continue to move toward more sustainable materials such as ECOCERT/COSMOS certified glass, and transitioning all packaging to being post-consumer recycled. Their packaging is ECOCERT/COSMOS certified where possible.
Augustinus Bader also works with The World Land Trust and The Woodland Trust to measure, reduce, and offset the carbon footprint from their paper usage, with the aim of going carbon neutral in 2022.
Etiket's holistic aesthetician shares her favourite tips and products for the upcoming season.
A change of season is upon us, and with that comes the need to adjust our skincare and wellness routine.
We asked Jordanna Kavannat, Etiket’s holistic aesthetician and Tata Harper Spa Specialist, to tell us what this change of season means for her.
“Spring is a beautiful time to awaken your spirit and to make self-care through skincare a more sacred practice. In Chinese medicine, the term ‘shen’ means to glow or light from within. Below are my favourite tips and products to help your ‘shen’ shine brightly this spring!”, says Jordanna.
WAKING UP
“I start my day with some kind of physical activity. Sweating and moving my body in the morning helps the flow of our lymphatic system and is a great way to release endorphins (happy vibes).”
POST WORKOUT
“A green smoothie with the Agent Nateur (Holi) Mane collagen is a great way to start the day with good nutrition. I find it helps me make better choices throughout the day.”
SHOWER TIME AND BATH ROUTINES
“The Lovefresh Vanilla Coffee Bar Soap gets rid of dead skin cells, helping regenerate your skin, and the coffee can help tighten skin and reduce cellulite. It’s like a morning cup of java!”
“I also love using the new Smoothing Body Brush from NUORI before my shower. Daily dry brushing of the body has been proven to boost microcirculation, stimulate the lymphatic system, and improve the removal of toxins”, adds Jordanna.
“As the winter layers gradually come off, I use Agent Nateur’s body (oil) to get ready for the warmer weather. I LOVE the smell of this product; it has caffeine and vitamin c, which gives noticeably great results.”
FACIAL CARE
“For me, it’s always Tata Harper. I modify my skincare regimen depending on the condition of my skin and the temperature outside. The Regenerating Cleanseris great to exfoliate the skin from the cold winter weather; it’s all about regeneration!”
“And finally, with our masks coming off, let’s talk lips! The ILIA Lip Wrap Reviving Balm is a luxurious daytime lip treatment. I’m obsessed!”
TREATMENT
”My favourite treatment to detox the body, face and soul at this time of year is the Deluxe Detox Body Treatment & Facial from Tata Harper, it’s a stimulating and purifying treatment that will reawaken your senses.”
Have you heard of dry brushing? This pre-shower body ritual has been touted by celebrities and those in-the-know because of its ability to procure an instant glow to the skin. The Danish brand NUORI had clearly heard of it, because they just launched their Smoothing Body Brush. This new product was carefully crafted with soft natural bristles to ensure the full benefits of dry brushing. On the heels of this launch, we wanted to learn more about the art of dry brushing. Here’s is what we found out…
DETOXES YOUR SKIN
Dry brushing is a great way to detox your body, as it encourages lymphatic drainage. In fact, the mechanical act of dry brushing speeds up the rate of blood pumping, which helps get the lymph through the body, removing toxins and pathogens more quickly. Also, by unclogging pores, it’s easier for the body to sweat and eliminate toxins in your system.
EXFOLIATES THE SKIN
Speaking of unclogging pores, dry brushing is a great way to remove the day’s dirt and oil, as well as dead skin cells. The result is increased cell turnover and more radiant, smooth skin.
BOOSTS CIRCULATION
When you’re dry brushing, you’ll notice that the areas you’ve stroked become flushed. The redness you see is not irritation, but increased blood flow. Your body is simply pushing more blood to those areas, therefore increasing blood circulation.
DRY BRUSHING FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
Dry brushing is suitable for all skin types, however, those with sensitive skin may find it to be too harsh. In that case, we recommend exfoliating with a dry washcloth, or body mitt. If you have really sensitive skin, try dry brushing once every couple of weeks. If you build up a tolerance to it successfully, then transition to one to two times a week.
You should also avoid dry brushing on your face since the skin is more sensitive than on the rest of your body. Opt for a chemical or physical exfoliant specifically designed for the skin on your face.
THE ROUTINE
Now that you understand the benefits of dry brushing, how do you get started? Before showering, NUORI recommends brushing your skin with long sweeping strokes that move towards the heart. Once you’ve covered that, hop in the shower and wash away those dead skin cells. After the shower, make sure you hydrate your skin with a nourishing product like NUORI’s Vital Body Balm, Enriched Hand & Body Lotion or Perfecting Body Oil. You’ll instantly notice smoother, more radiant skin!
Not sure what to pack for a winter getaway? Discover the skincare, makeup and haircare essentials I'm packing for my upcoming tropical vacation!
I’m jetting off. In an attempt to flee the cold Canadian winter we’ve been enduring, I’ve booked a trip with my friends to the tropical island of Turks and Caicos. I always pack light when I travel, especially when I’m going somewhere warm. A few bathing suits, shorts, a sundress or two, and of course, some beauty essentials. Keep reading to discover the products I can’t possibly leave without!
SKINCARE
Let me preface this blog post by saying that I will be checking a bag. When you’re like me and are unwilling to compromise on skincare and beauty products, you always check a bag. Trying to fit all of your essentials into that small plastic bag TSA gives you at the airport is a sport, and I want no part of it. For my cleanser, I’m bringing the Pro-Derm Gentle Cleanser. It’s been a staple in my skincare routine for over a year now and I just can’t get enough. I will also be adding my Phloretin CF Vitamin C Serum from SkinCeuticals. I use it everyday, but it’s especially important when you’re getting a lot of sun exposure. As you may or may not know, vitamin C compensates for sunscreen’s inherent shortcomings by neutralizing the free radical damage that sun exposure causes. They literally play a defensive role by diffusing the effects of the bad rays that make it through your sunscreen.
For sunscreen, I will be bringing my Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield SPF 50 and the Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50 to re-apply my SPF throughout the day. In the event that I get a little too much sun, I like to bring a soothing moisturizer for my skin, just in case. The Radical Recovery After-Sun Lotion is definitely a must when venturing off on a beach getaway. Like a wheatgrass shot for your skin, this lotion delivers powerful antioxidants and nourishing, soothing ingredients that help skin bounce-back after a day in the sun. For my body, I use the new COOLA Mineral Sunscreen Spray. It’s lightweight, offers SPF30 protection and is water-resistant!
MAKEUP
I like to keep my makeup simple when I’m on vacation. The weather is hot and humid, so I’m usually either in the water or dabbing my face with blotting papers. For that reason, minimal makeup is key. I’ve decided to bring the RMS ‘Un’ Cover-Up to use as a concealer and to cover-up any imperfections. I’m also bringing ILIA’s Limitless Lash Mascara and the Colorescience Color Balm Collection. This kit comes with three balm shades: blush, berry, bronze. The great thing about these shades is that they can work as a blush, bronzer, eye shadow and lip tint. Plus, they offer SPF50 protection. When I travel, I look for versatility in my products, and the Color Balm Collection offers just that!
HAIRCARE
I’m pretty simple when it comes to my hair. I will pack my favourite shampoo and conditionner duo: R&CO’s Gemstone Color Shampoo and Conditioner, as well as R&CO’s Rockaway Salt Spray. My hair is naturally curly, so I like to lean into the beach hair look when I’m at the beach. This spray adds volume and texture and just accentuates my natural beachy curls. I also pack Rahua’s Hydration Detangler, especially when I know I’m going to be spending my days in the ocean and at the pool! This product helps keep hair detangled, moisturizes hair, smooths frizz, prevents breakage and damage, and provides color-treated hair with photoprotection. Everything you need on a beach vacation.
