Founded in 2006 by Ben Gorham, Byredo draws inspiration from his multicultural background from Sweden, to India or Canada, and personal experiences to create fragrances and everyday lifestyle products that evoke deep emotions. The name “Byredo” stems from “by redolence,” an old English term for aromatic fragrance, aptly reflecting the brand’s ethos.
Being free to explore collective memories is the name of the game for Gorham, whose journey from a professional basketball player and fine arts major to a creative force behind Byredo has shaped his distinctive, intuitive approach to design. A chance meeting with perfumer Pierre Wulff convinced him that he’d rather create fragrances than paintings. With no formal training in the field, Gorham, 31 years old, sought out the services of world-renowned perfumers Olivia Giacobetti and Jerome Epinette, explaining his olfactory desires and letting them create the compositions. As an outsider in the beauty industry, Ben is somewhat of an anomaly and has been recognized for his personal style and connection to fashion and art in several international magazines such as French Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Elle, to name a few.
Focusing on collaboration and the power of storytelling, Gorham’s creations, such as the evocative Rose of No Man’s Land and De Los Santos fragrances, bridge cultures and rituals, offering a global perspective rooted in personal legacy.
