With Movember just around the corner, what better time to “sharpen” up your technique for the most clean and comfortable shave yet! For many men sensitive skin and shaving can cause irritation, razor burn, bumps, dryness and/or redness. Here are some tips shaving tips for men with sensitive skin to help prepare the skin for shaving and decrease skin irritation and discomfort.
First and foremost, be sure to give yourself a bit more time in the morning to incorporate these five tips into your shaving ritual:
1. Start With A Clean Slate
Keeping your skin healthy and clean is key to a comfortable shave. Start by cleansing your skin with warm water to eliminate any excess oil and impurities and wait at least 10 minutes before you start shaving.
2. Moisturize Before Shaving
If you find that shaving really irritates your skin, try moisturizing before you shave. Moisturizers with aloe, shea butter or essential oils can help keep skin hydrated throughout your shave and will help the blade slide a little more smoothly across your face.
3. Switch Your Blade More Frequently
Using the right blade can make all the difference, but if you have sensitive skin, make sure that you change your blade more often than usual. Two to three shaves per blade will ensure a clean and sharp blade that will glide much easier across your skin and help cut down on irritation.
4. Lather Up!
Always apply a high-quality shaving cream, gel and/or oil to your skin before shaving. Allow the cream or gel to sit for a few minutes and help soften the hair. Shave slowly in the direction that the hair grows and completely rinse your blade after each stroke. Try to avoid having to go over an area more than once. Take your time. Patience is key.
5. Maintain A Post-Shave Routine
After shaving, rinse your face with lukewarm water to remove any residual shaving cream or gel. Gently pat your skin dry with a clean towel and apply an aftershave gel. If you have a beard or moustache, apply a moisturizing oil. This will help re-hydrate and re-balance your skin.
