Johann Maria Farina (1709) was an Italian perfumer who created the first Eau de Cologne. It offered a revolutionary alternative to the heavy scents of the times and inspired a new way to wear personal fragrance. He wrote to his brother in 1708; “I have discovered a scent that reminds me of a spring morning in Italy, of mountain narcissus, orange blossom just after the rain. It gives me great refreshment, strengthens my senses and imagination.” He would come to name this new composition Eau de Cologne after his hometown of Cologne, Germany.
Eau de Cologne is a classic citrus fragrance that seems to never go out of style. Recently we have seen the revival of the Cologne by Atelier Cologne, which became the first fragrance house entirely dedicated to Cologne – but with a modern twist. But let’s go back to a very traditional Eau de Cologne from Penhaligon’s London launched in 1927 and resurrected in 2010 as part of the Anthology Collection. Although classified as a fragrance for men, Penhaligon’s Eau de Cologne is in my opinion unisex. When I sprayed it on my wrist, I immediately smell the expected blast of citrus one would get from any cologne. It’s bright, sunny and fresh. The bergamot and Neroli add a bit of bitterness to the lemon and orange notes, while rosemary gives the composition a slight herbal dimension. This is a very simple and easy to wear fragrance that just works well… I would say on anyone’s skin. Projection is good, while longevity is that of any cologne – short and sweet. Keep the bottle nearby for a refresh during the day.
